Medical Massage Therapy

One of the services we offer in conjunction with Advanced Chiropractic care is Medical Massage Therapy.  Also known as Neuromuscular Therapy or "NMT", Medical Massage Therapy is not the typical "feel good" massage you might be used to finding in spas, discount massage facilities, or even with most private practitioners.

Medical Massage Therapy is condition-based, results-oriented massage therapy that addresses the soft-tissue aspect of Advanced Chiropractic care and focuses on reducing or eliminating chronic aches and pains, nerve pinching, and other problems in a clinical setting.  "Soft-tissue" generally refers to the soft tissues of the body such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, as opposed to harder tissues like bones and joints.  Patients often have a soft-tissue component which usually goes hand-in-hand with their physical/structural complaint.   In many cases, tight muscles, sprains & strains, or torn tendons and ligaments are half of the problem. Once we determine the actual source of a patient’s particular issue, we utilize specific massage therapy protocols in order to strategically treat it.

A Medical Massage Therapy session can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.  During this time, multiple techniques can be used to target a specific area in order to achieve a particular goal, such as pain relief or a decrease in numbness or tingling.  Usually, the therapist will spend the entire session working a single area, as opposed to the whole-body relaxation massages provided in most spas.

At San Antonio Family Alternative Medicine, all Medical Massage Therapy is performed by a Licensed Massage Therapist with training in Medical Massage Therapy; all treatments are authorized and overseen by one of the Doctors for necessity, accuracy, and efficacy.
